"Oh Susanna" is adapted and arranged by Taj, and "Chevrolet" is a great, bluesy love song covered by Taj -- both feature smoking lead guitar from Jesse Ed Davis, who played with Taj on his great first solo album in (see my review). Taj Mahal is the debut album by the American blues artist of the same name. The whole record is a compelling amalgam of stylistic and technical achievements, to be heard in tracks like Sleepy John Estes' "Diving Duck Blues" with textures resembling the mix on the early Cream albums, while "The Celebrated Walkin' Blues" has the sound of a late release by Muddy Waters.

  2. "Oh Susanna", a traditional song, is transformed by Mahal during it's 10 1/2 minutes, into something else entirely-a much harder hitting rendition. The slippery "Bacon Fat" (no pun intended) has a great groove enhanced by a good Davis guitar solo over a percolating band/5(37).
